One of the most remarkable things about Canada is how easily political theatre works on Eastern Canadian voters.

Mark Carney can walk away from a trade deal, turn confrontation with our largest trading partner into a political strategy, and much of Eastern Canada will applaud it as courageous leadership.

Albertans look at the same thing and ask why anyone would willingly sacrifice jobs, investment and prosperity for a polling boost.

That isn’t merely left versus right.

It increasingly feels like two different peoples with fundamentally different economic interests, political instincts and definitions of common sense sharing one federal government.

The incompatibility is becoming impossible to ignore.

Electricity prices could skyrocket by as much as $460 per household in Alberta because of Meta’s new AI data centre.

Danielle Smith’s solution? She told Albertans to lock in a power rate.

The cost of living is already out of control in this province. It is irresponsible for the Premier to bring in massive data centres without knowing exactly how much they will cost Albertans, or whether the benefits are even worth it.

Asking Albertans to simply pay more is not a solution.

The Alberta NDP has called for a pause on new data centre approvals until a fair and robust framework is in place. Albertans deserve a government that does its homework, understands the costs and benefits, and makes responsible decisions that put Albertans first.

Fellow Albertans,
Jason Kenney told us to stay. Rachel Notley told us to stay. The federal Conservatives are lining up again to tell us the same thing. They had their turn. We are done taking that lecture.
Fourth generation here. Sixth generation living in their parents’ basements. We sent hundreds of billions more to Ottawa than we got back. We paid into CPP, EI, and federal tax on every metric while other provinces cashed the difference. Quebec keeps hydro cheap, leaves its oil and gas in the ground, and the formula pays them for it. Alberta works the resource and gets zero. That is not a partnership. That is a toll.
They say we can’t make it. Landlocked countries do it with less than we have. When Ottawa needs a card in a trade fight, they suddenly remember our oil and gas. They need the resource. They just refuse to let us keep what it earns.
The convoy was the last mask off. Frozen bank accounts. Federal emergency powers used on our own people. A lot of us felt the NEP all over again: Ottawa reminding the West who is in charge. Some of those citizens are still paying for it. I don’t need another speech about unity from the same system that did that.
Kenney failed. Notley failed. Ottawa will not rewrite a formula that feeds its voting base. If they will not change the rules, we stop playing by them.
Our resources. Our pensions. Our province. We can run this ourselves. We are not asking anymore.
We’re done.
