Since its launch in November 2021, the Human Milk Bank has collected approximately 400 litres of donated human milk, distributed about 380 litres, engaged around 600 donors and supported approximately 610 newborns, predominantly preterm infants.

At Nsambya, the journey took nearly a year and involved assessing facility readiness, developing SOPs and guidelines, establishing audit systems, strengthening lactation support and learning from established programmes in the region, including Kenya.

Dr. Grace Cheng stressed that nutrition extends beyond what happens during pregnancy, infancy or childhood. It also means looking at the wider food system including food safety, processed foods, consumer behaviour and the growing burden of diet-related NCDs.

A significant milestone for nutrition in Uganda 🇺🇬
The Guest of Honour, Dr. Richard Mugahi, officially closed the event with the national launch of three important nutrition guidelines and tools: the Human Milk Banking Guidelines, Nutrition in Disability Guidelines, and the Nutrient Profile Model (NPM).
Each tool addresses a different part of Uganda’s nutrition landscape:
🔹 Human Milk Banking Guidelines — strengthening standards for the safe collection, processing, storage and provision of donated human milk.
🔹 Nutrition in Disability Guidelines — promoting more inclusive nutrition services that recognise the specific needs of people living with disabilities.
🔹 Nutrient Profile Model — providing a scientific basis for assessing the nutritional composition of foods and supporting healthier food environments.
Together, these tools translate nutrition policy into practical action, strengthening health systems, protecting vulnerable populations and supporting better nutrition outcomes for Ugandans across the life course.

Today, Uganda officially launches the Nutrient Profile Model (NPM) 🇺🇬 — a science-based tool that helps identify foods high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats.
A major milestone for public health and healthier food choices. The next step is turning this evidence into action through Front of Pack Warning Labelling (FOPWL).

The NPM is more than a technical framework. Its evidence can support action across the food system from Front-of-Pack Warning Labelling and food marketing to procurement in public institutions helping shift the focus from individual choices to healthier systems.

Patrick highlighted that When men share childcare, provide practical support and challenge harmful norms, mothers are better supported and children have a stronger chance to thrive.
#BreastfeedingWeek26
Speaking during #BreastfeedingWeek26, Dr. Victoria Nakibuuka, Neonatologist at @NsambyaHospital, shared the hospital’s experience in establishing and operating a Human Milk Bank in Uganda.
For preterm babies, early nutrition is especially important. Their nutritional needs are high while their organs are still developing, yet some mothers may not have enough breast milk in the first 48 hours after delivery.
A Human Milk Bank helps bridge this gap by providing screened, processed, stored and safely distributed human milk to vulnerable newborns whose mothers’ milk is temporarily unavailable or insufficient.
Since its launch in November 2021, Nsambya Hospital’s Human Milk Bank has collected about 400 litres of donated milk, distributed 380 litres, engaged 600 donors and supported 610 newborns.
Human milk is more than nutrition for vulnerable newborns. It can give them a stronger opportunity to grow, develop and thrive.

Dr. Richard Mugahi - Commissioner for Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health at the Ministry of Health in Uganda
Breastfeeding saves lives—but are we doing enough to make it possible for every mother? 🤱🏾
At Uganda’s #WorldBreastfeedingWeek commemoration, the call was clear: commitments must be matched with concrete action.
From stronger support for mothers and breastfeeding-friendly workplaces to protecting families from inappropriate marketing of breast-milk substitutes, Uganda must continue to strengthen what works.
The question is no longer whether we know the benefits of breastfeeding. How do we turn that evidence into action at scale? Can we walk the talk?

Ever wondered why some packaged foods may be less healthy than others? The Uganda Nutrient Profile Model (NPM) is a science-based tool that helps assess processed foods by looking at nutrients such as sugar, salt/sodium, saturated fat, trans fat and total fat.
In simple terms, the NPM helps answer one important question: “How healthy or unhealthy is this food based on what is inside it?”
It is not meant to stop people from eating or enjoying food. Instead, it helps identify products that contain high levels of nutrients that, when consumed too much over time, can increase the risk of health problems such as high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
The NPM can also encourage food manufacturers to make healthier products by reducing excessive amounts of sugar, salt and unhealthy fats.
Isn't that interesting?
For Uganda, this means using science to understand our changing food environment and help people make better-informed choices about the foods they buy and eat.
