The CFIA failed to justify their cull of the BC ostriches.

Carcasses of ostriches were last tested in December. There has been no testing since despite immense calls for it from all sides of the political spectrum.

Even Elizabeth May admitted the majority of her constituents who contacted her do not support the cull. She added that it would make sense for the CFIA to retest the birds.

They refused.

No matter how many times or how nicely people asked, they refused. Because they don't have to listen to anyone.

That's what this is. The public is overwhelmingly against the BC ostrich farm cull. But they're doing it anyways.

They don't care what people want. What they say goes.

And the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada DID not give the farm a fair forum to present evidence and their case. Anyone who thinks that they go to court in this country and get fairness is delusional.

Your outcome depends on your immutable characteristics and the judge you get, not the law or the facts.

Our institutions do not work for us. It is not justifiable to kill this family's life work when all the available evidence (the CFIA threatened anyone with $200,000 fines if they dared to test a single ostrich) points to these birds being healthy.

But the government is killing them anyways because what they say goes. What they want happens.

Take a lesson, politicians on the right. You can just do things. Stop trying to please people who hate you. Stop bowing. The left certainly doesn't. And that's why they win.

If the CFIA released testing at this point, it couldn't be trusted. They have had plenty of opportunities to do objective testing and refused. Anything further they say on this matter will be unreliable.

They had a good faith opportunity to engage respectfully and to do proper science. They refused. They waved their magical guidebooks and powers of incompetent bureaucracy. They knew the courts would do the same.

They've contradicted their policies at every turn. No PPE. Then PPE. Then tracking material like dirt and debris from the "infected hotzone" to hotel parking lots and all over the place.

It's a joke. A farce. A total abuse of power. A political performance.

This is a sad, predictable end to a sad story. And it's the same story of our country at large.
