Me 😂 your unofficial librarian I think I answered a lot of questions but if you still have some drop them in replies✨

Both Seungkwan and Dino will enlist in the ROK Army Military Band (군악대) on October 26.

But what exactly is an Army Military Band? How do you get in? What do military musicians actually do? And why doesn't every musical idol take this route?

Let's break it down.

1. What is the ROK Army Military Band?

Army military musicians (군악병) are not an “idol unit” or an entertainment division.

According to the Military Manpower Administration (MMA), their role is to perform music for military ceremonies and military cultural/artistic activities.

It is a formal military specialty built around musical performance.

2. And no this isn't the old “entertainment soldier” system.

South Korea's former entertainment-soldier system (연예병사 / 국방홍보지원대) was abolished in 2013 following controversy surrounding discipline, management and preferential-treatment concerns.

Military bands are a completely different system.

They remain a formal military specialty with their own recruitment and selection process.

3. Can an idol simply “get in” because they're famous?

No.

Military musicians are recruited through a practical audition (실기평가), with the MMA publishing specific requirements and scoring criteria for different musical specialties.

For the 2026 recruitment cycle, candidates who score at least 70/100 on the practical assessment can be considered, with selection made among the higher-scoring applicants.

And the audition is surprisingly specific.

For the practical-music singer (가수) category, the current criteria include:

• Sight-reading — 30 points
• Free song — 70 points
• Performance experience & expressiveness
• Specified repertoire requirements
• MR accompaniment is permitted

Classical vocalists (성악) have different repertoire requirements.

So there isn't simply one generic “singing audition.”

The Army also sets different performance standards depending on the type of band.

For larger 50+ member bands, the MMA lists:

• Wind/percussion → music-college level
• Strings, Korean traditional music & vocals → highest level in the field
• Set drum → professional-band level

Smaller bands have different standards.

This is a specialized audition not a celebrity shortcut.

4. So what does being a military musician actually involve?

The official MMA description includes musical performances for:

Military ceremonies
Military cultural & artistic activities
Various official military events

Depending on their eventual assignment, military musicians can perform as part of their unit's official activities and public military performances.

Their exact schedule will depend on their assigned unit and duties.

5. What happens after they enlist?

Military musicians still undergo the normal military process.

After basic military training, they are assigned according to the Army's personnel needs and the requirements of their specialty.

The MMA also notes that some division-level bands may select musicians after training based on their required manpower.

So even within “military band,” assignments aren't necessarily identical.

PLEDIS Entertainment has officially announced Mingyu’s upcoming enlistment and his assignment to alternative service (social service personnel).

To ensure accurate information is shared and prevent unnecessary speculation, here is a fact-based overview of South Korea’s military service system and Mingyu’s publicly documented medical history.

Mingyu, born in 1997, will begin his military service in 2026 at age 29. Under South Korea’s Military Service Act, postponement of military service obligations generally cannot extend beyond age 30. His enlistment therefore falls strictly within the applicable legal framework.

Mingyu has a publicly documented history of severe lower back pain.
In October 2023, during SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN promotions, PLEDIS officially announced that Mingyu experienced sudden, severe lower back pain that made movement difficult.

He received medical treatment, and medical staff advised him to take time off to monitor his recovery.

Musculoskeletal conditions can be considered during South Korea’s military physical evaluation process.

The Military Manpower Administration (MMA) requires official medical documentation and, depending on the condition, considers medical records and diagnostic imaging (X-rays, CT, MRI). The final military-service classification is determined through this official evaluation process.

Social service personnel are individuals classified as supplementary service (보충역)

following the official physical exam:

* They perform public-service duties at government agencies, public institutions, or social welfare facilities.

* Their service period is 21 months.

* They are also subject to military training, with up to 30 days of training included within their service period.

By law under South Korean personal information and privacy regulations, entertainment agencies disclose only the final legal service category, not an individual’s private diagnosis details or surgical history.

Mingyu’s classification strictly follows official state evaluation standards. Please rely on verified facts over online speculation.

Let’s assume for a second that all 4 members who did, are doing, or will do alternative service miraculously got healed so well just a day before enlistment that they could literally join the Navy SEALs. Oh, and let's throw Scoups in there too let’s pretend his ACL miraculously healed 100% too.

Or let’s pretend people got so mad they protested until the government took notice.

Would any of that change a single thing?
No.
Here is why:

The MMA Evaluates the Permanent Medical Record, Not "Current Feats"

The Military Manpower Administration (MMA) evaluates candidates based on verified medical history, surgical records, chronic damage, and official scans (MRI/CT).

A person feeling better today or performing on stage does not erase years of documented spinal damage or reconstructed ligaments in state medical files.

Re-examinations Don't Work on Fan Protests

You cannot "protest" someone into active duty. Draft classifications are strictly governed by the Military Service Act. Once a state medical board assigns a Grade 4 or Grade 5 based on statutory criteria, that classification stands unless the candidate themselves officially petitions for a re-evaluation with new medical proof.

Exemptions & Alternative Service Are Legal Rights, Not "Cheating"

The system is built specifically so that citizens with severe physical injuries aren't forced into combat training that could permanently cripple them. S.Coups’ complete exemption (Grade 5) and members’ Grade 4 assignments were issued directly by state military doctors following legal protocols.

So even in this fantasy scenario where everyone magically heals overnight, the South Korean legal system doesn't retroactively rewrite medical history based on internet outrage. They follow the law maybe try reading it sometime!
