On top of this, bank accounts of 18 people, including jailed Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu’s son, have been frozen. All this is happening as Turkey’s finance minister Mehmet Simsek is in London trying to convince investors that Turkey is a safe place to put their money.
A Turkish court effectively ousted the main opposition leader, Ozgur Ozel, annulling the 2023 party congress that elected him chairman. The case was seen as a test of Turkey's shaky balance between democracy and autocracy https://t.co/n133BhHWi0
A dark day indeed.
An appeals court in Turkey annulled the main opposition party's 2023 election of Özgür Özel as its chair.
Former chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has been waiting in the wings, so to speak.
371 security/ privacy academics, including a Turing Award winner, just issued a letter saying age verification laws are building global surveillance infrastructure. Every search, message, and article read would require ID verification. https://t.co/XdCPta6pn1

Istanbuls Oberbürgermeister İmamoğlu sitzt seit März wegen Korruptionsvorwürfen in Haft. Dem Ansehen des Erdoğan-Rivalen hat das bisher kaum geschadet. Kritiker vermuten, dass deshalb nun neue Anschuldigungen gegen ihn laut werden. https://t.co/CzN2pAE2Hg
I do not accept that democracy, justice, and liberty are no longer part of our common future. The world is once again trying to convince us that these values no longer matter, but I refuse to believe it.
From my twelve-square-meter cell in Istanbul, I wrote for Le Monde about one of my Kafkaesque trials, the so-called diploma case. I am accused of forgery, yet no document has ever been proven false. This is what a broken system looks like. It is not justice. It is a political act that turns law into a weapon and truth into a threat.
A century after Kafka described a man condemned without knowing his crime, we are still living in a world ruled by arbitrary accusations and political fear. But Türkiye deserves better. Our people have fought for democracy and freedom for generations, and they will not give up what they earned through courage and sacrifice.
Justice will return. Democracy will prevail.

@doctorow Relatedly, if @doctorow is coming to your town for his book tour, go see him talk! I recently had a chance to hear him on enshittification and it was well worth the trip to Roosevelt Island.
As @doctorow said a couple of weeks ago in NYC: the central fantasy at the core of billionaire preppers is a doomsday that will uniquely require their skills and supplies.
Thirty years ago, an Austrian theologian spoke to Peter Thiel about the theories of Carl Schmitt, the theorist tapped by the Nazis to justify Germany's slip from democracy to dictatorship. Those theories have been a roadmap for the billionaire ever since.
