The thing about being young and healthy and thin and able-bodied is that it makes you think chronic illnesses only happen to other people, and somehow, they must have done something “wrong” to “deserve” being sick.

Most doctors/clinicians fit that profile for at least the first half of their careers. And they might be from families, zip codes, even ancestries that also have enjoyed these privileges.

This idea of “otherness” of ill-health is not only false but can be harmful. It contributes to patient blaming and dismissal, both can lead to medical gaslighting.

To combat this, medical education needs to change its narrative about this otherness of chronic diseases. Curricula and textbooks must seriously investigate their intrinsic and extrinsic biases when including medical “facts.” After all, if most people don’t fit our textbooks, is it the patients or the textbooks that are wrong? And medical schools must find ways to embrace health, body, among other realms of diversity.

When “signs and symptoms” stop only happening to “the patients” but could to “all of us,” we can then truly start to listen. 🩵 #AskThePatient
