The Power of Traders' Intuition #2
We have added another level to this study, where I micromanaged the entries, partials, and exits of each individual data point from the previous filtered dataset in an unbiased environment. We have also excluded the five best trades overall to ensure the results are more conservative.
1st Level: From the full dataset of gappers from 2016-2023, I approved only the ones I would trade. The environment was designed to be unbiased; thus, I had no information about specific tickers, dates, overall market conditions, specific prices, or news. I only had a two-year price history and a visual representation of where the gap was.
2nd Level: From the approved entries of the previous dataset, I micromanaged each individual position in the same unbiased environment.
Intuition is one of the most crucial aspects of trading. in my opinion, It is one of the keys to unlocking that second layer in your trading journey that is often overlooked. It can be the small tweak that moves you from breakeven to profitability, and this claim is supported by the results of the study.
For me, the keys to unlocking the second layer, which enables better stability and overall performance, are:
1. Finding inefficiencies in common risk management tactics and making them fit into your system, numbers.
2. Developing better situational awareness that adjusts your overall risk and aggressive-defensive tactics.
3. Enhancing your implementation of the same ideas. Different implementations lead to totally different results. For example, in 2020, you might have had the idea that the market would correct. Shorting $SPY is different from shorting $QQQ. Shorting $QQQ is different from going long $UVXY, etc etc. The same ideas can lead to totally different results with different implementations.
4. Enhancing your intuition. This can be done by studying the markets deeply. This can't be taught, although I am positive that a process can be developed to make it efficient.
Each of the above points is extremely crucial, and when combined, they can lead to major improvements in the application of your already gained knowledge. I strongly believe that great performance lies in small tweaks to commonly available knowledge rather than trying to find "new rare" knowledge in setups and strategies.
We are currently in the process of writing a paper, which will soon be ready with many details, graphs, and tables. I will also try to mention some of the micromanagement tactics. Stay tuned!
