So I saw 2 articles about Vernon’s dual citizenship and I want to talk about it a bit since you know KOREA DOESN’T ALLOW DUAL CITIZENSHIP 😭

Well… it actually does, under certain conditions.

Vernon was born with Korean and US citizenship. Under Article 12 of the Nationality Act (국적법), someone who has multiple nationalities before turning 20 generally has to choose a nationality before turning 22.

But this doesn’t necessarily mean they have to give up their other citizenship. Under Articles 12–13, eligible dual nationals can choose Korean nationality while making an 외국국적불행사서약, basically a “pledge not to exercise foreign nationality.”

And this is an actual legal mechanism under Korea’s Nationality Act, not some special law made for Vernon. The system was introduced through the 2010 amendment to the Act.

The pledge means you can keep your foreign citizenship, but you agree not to exercise the rights of that citizenship in Korea as a foreign national. This includes things like using your foreign citizenship to receive treatment or benefits reserved for foreigners, obtaining foreigner status in Korea, or repeatedly entering and leaving Korea using your foreign passport.

So basically: you can keep the US citizenship, but you cannot use it in Korea as a way to be treated as an American/foreigner.

Vernon could also have chosen to give up his Korean citizenship and keep only his US citizenship. But retaining both under the legal system was also possible.

And military service is a separate matter. Being a dual citizen does NOT exempt a Korean male citizen from military obligations, which is why Vernon is serving now.
