Seems Yasin Ayari is out of contract end of season. Can’t be many 22 / 23 year old midfielders with as many PL appearances as him.

These were my thoughts after 6 months. He’s not strong or fast enough to play final third. He needs to play deeper. In the PL, he can only play as a midfielder. But poses its own question - was that what he was bought for.

In discussions with newly appointed head coach Andoni Iraola, a long-term vision was laid out to Florian Wirtz in which, as the years pass, Florian could gradually operate deeper and deeper on the pitch.

Iraola sees similarities to the development of Luka Modrić and Thiago Alcântara, who initially operated much closer to a traditional number ten before evolving into deeper midfielders capable of controlling games from the heart of the pitch.

Florian would not be hesitant about such an evolution, as he believes his press resistance, ability to initiate attacks through progressive passing and instinct for putting teammates into advantageous positions could become even more influential from deeper areas.

Interestingly, those closest to Florian, including his father and agent Hans-Joachim Wirtz, also believe that moving deeper could gradually remove him from the public pressure of constantly being measured through goals and assists, numbers that have never truly defined his game to begin with.

Should it come to it and that is a big if, we can probably offload Florian Wirtz for somewhere near the fee we paid for him and if not a profit.

Enzo Fernandez didn’t do that much during his time at Chelsea to justify that fee. Just inflation playing its part.

Think this is one of benefits of paying the big fees for younger players rather than those in their peak. Doubt we ever get anywhere near the fee back for Isak. So he has to perform.

Ironically I think Chelsea may well be one of the clubs that would buy Wirtz.

4 of the 9 defensive options will need to be replaced summer 2027 due to contracts expiring. And also huge question marks over Frimpong and Kerkez. May need to be replaced too. Next summer priority will be defenders.
