Cat check: The 12,000 figure is from 2023 data for arrests under the Communications Act 2003 and the Malicious Communications Act 1988. These laws cover sending messages that are "grossly offensive, threatening, indecent, or menacing over communications networks" - so arrests include people sending threatening text messages, harassing stalking victims with malicious phone calls, unsolicited pornographic images etc. The suggestion that it's an attack on "free speech" is nonsense.

Societies have to balance freedoms. In the UK we banned most guns following the horrific murder of a class of school children in 1996. Collectively we decided that curtailing the rights of gun owners in order to make children safer was the correct balance of freedoms. We haven't had a similar incident since. The abhorrent murder of Charlie Kirk was the 32nd death from gunfire at an American school in 2025.
