#shawpartita is a very interesting piece! Each part is almost its own individual idea that completes part of the overall piece. While the text the vocalists speak isn’t always the same they do build off of each other to create a thought. #MUS365
#cartercatenaires this piece is extremely rhythmic! The main rhythm is played almost the entire way with slight variation and using varying pitches. Even though there is the continued rhythm there’s not really anything melodic about this piece #MUS365
#adamsatomic what precision! After the first vocal solo portion Adams creates this interwoven rhythmic section that has nearly every orchestra member coming in from another’s sound. The strings add to the intensity of the vocal line #MUS365
#golijovmarcos in 24 Golijov shows off work that is not typical of what we have heard from a passion before. He pulls from Latin America with the rhythms and vocal styles. In 26 he returns to the more typical idea of earlier passions with added spice #MUS365
#gubaidulinarejoice the gliss in the cello line makes it feel like the piece is ending but it’s not. The end 45 seconds are “silent” except for a glassy violin sound that interrupts it. Are they giving space to listen to the small voice within? #MUS365
#partantiphons has a very pure sound and reminds me of a Whitacre type of piece. The groups are singing different words but it all fits very precisely and still has an overarching smoothness to the more rhythmic areas #MUS365
#shengseasons seems to use tuning that would be more common in an eastern area. For solo cello but utilizes double stops to simulate a second player. #MUS365
#schnittkeconcerto is quite interesting. It is mostly dissonant that builds in intensity that leads to an almost melodic section with a sense of something eerie. Overall, VERY dissonant and individualized parts #mus365
#reichcomeout starts with a full clip of speaking that is repeated then broken down to the phrase “come out and show” It slowly becomes more inaudible as clips overlap. I think this can be related to how repetition can resemble a broken record, no matter how important #MUS365
#DaughertyDead the Ostinato and driving force of the piece is very strong and stringy later is passed to the brass. The sudden drop in instrumentation adds to the unsettling feeling. The piece smooths out again before returning to “chaos” #MUS365
#CrumbAngels is incredibly interesting! Crumb really utilizes the effects the strings are capable of and had the percussion complement their sound nicely... but... what’s up with the voice and sudden silence? #MUS365
#BernsteinCool the high hat and snaps emphasize beats 2&4 which adds to the overall jazz feel. The trumpets have some fun flutter tongue moments with a nice drum fill that breaks up a brass moment. The vocalist sneaks in an out of the musical texture. #MUS365
#GillespieAnthropology the overall piece reminds me of fast forwarding a tape. The sax solo is all over in scale motion and incredibly chromatic #MUS365
#pendereckhiroshima fills me with intense anxiety. All the players drop and build upon each other creating a siren sound that’s incredibly disturbing. I see how this could be a replication of the feelings that the victims could have felt
#babbitphilomel was far too long for what it is. I feel that this piece was also created for a very niche audience. This must be very taxing to preform as the precision needed while performing with a recording is huge #MUS365
