Following the tragic and sudden death of John Ritter, production on his starring sitcom, '8 Simple Rules', took a hiatus, allowing the cast to grieve and give executives time to decide how to address his passing.

They eventually decided to have John's character, Paul Hennessy, die in-show as well, with his character collapsing during a short grocery store run to get milk.

This took place in a two-part special called "Goodbye," in Season 2, where we see Cate getting a phone call, receiving the news.
