Momen ini adalah persalinan yang langka, namanya en caul birth.

En caul birth adalah fenomena dimana bayi lahir masih sepenuhnya terbungkus dalam kantung amnion (amnionic sac) yang utuh, tanpa pecah selama proses kelahiran.

Kejadiannya itu sekitar <1 per 80.000 kelahiran.

Pada kebanyakan kelahiran, selama fase aktif persalinan (terutama saat kontraksi kuat), tekanan dalam rahim menyebabkan ruptur membran amnion (pecahnya kantung ketuban). Air ketuban keluar, dan kepala atau tubuh bayi keluar tanpa selaput tersebut.

Pada kelahiran en caul, membran amnion atau kantung ketuban, tidak pecah meskipun serviks sudah membuka sempurna dan bayi telah melewati jalan lahir. Bayi dilahirkan masih terbungkus selaput bening yang mengkilap, seperti berada di dalam gelembung atau “caul” (bahasa Inggris kuno untuk selaput).

Kelahiran en caul adalah contoh indah bagaimana mekanisme perlindungan alami tubuh ibu dan bayi dapat bekerja secara sempurna. Ia aman selama dilakukan di fasilitas kesehatan dengan pengawasan dokter kandungan atau bidan profesional.
