Eyes on 10 July :
Sunday's Ishikawa sanin by-election.
The state is Jimin turf; shu, 3 out of 3; san, 2 out of 2.
A measure of Mr. Kishida's popularity, win ratio.
(votes to the winner divided into those to the runner-up). 2016, 1.76; 2019, 1.99.

Former state minister Katayama Satsuki had deserted team Nikai (Shisuikai-46). Would Mr. Abe woo her into his team (Seiwaken-94). A round about way of softening the reticence of his members towards re-welcoming policy chief Takaichi Sanae (9-ind).

About face.
Thursday's Kishida/Yamaguchi one-on-one yielded
an election strategy for July, similar to 2016/19's.
In the 32 single-seaters, Ko endorses Ji; in 5 multi-seaters, (Saitama, Kanagawa, Aichi, Hyogo, Fukuoka),
Ji/Ko cross endorsement; In 6, Ko has no entry;
none of which looks as an unsurmountable
obstacle to a 3-party deal with July in mind.
Next dialogue instalment , Tue 16.

The Ji-Ko-Koku policy dialogue proceeds at the secgen level. Besides gasoline prices (with the event, exquisite timing), Kokumin has put on the table issues like corona-related economic assistance, debt repayment relief, support for child care ...
Recent events add an angle to the Abe-Kishida rift.
The former pm's posture was read as : "2 are ours;
let's talk about the other 2". The pm's, in the Diet, :

The "Abe entry" looks the favorite but an election is never certain until it is over. If he were to lose, what
a blow to the team leader's prestige.

Sunday's Ishikawa gubernatorial, a headache for
Mr. Abe. 2 candidates originate from his Seiwakai team; 1 too many. He campaigns for one and has tried unsuccessfully to talk the other out of running.
Jimin/Kokumin election collaboration in July ?
Kokumin fields a candidate in just 6 states.
In the remaining 39, it could support the Jimin entry.

The qualifications as a diplomat of foreign affairs minister Hayashi Yoshimasa (1-Kishida) have come into question in the Diet. Music to Mr. Abe who, if the next election is held under 10-10, might be his rival in the general election.

Mr. Abe, always in search of a good word before the cameras, came up with the novel "nuclear sharing". Which leaves many wondering. Mr. Kishida tried to deflate in the sanin budget hearings.
