🚨 BREAKING: John Healey will announce at the Budget that HMRC will be given powers to seize money directly from the bank accounts of people who fail to pay their tax
@Analyst_G@serenelyjoyful 2022 looked like it was heading for a meaningful correction until the market grabbed onto this thing called AI like a drowning man reaching for a piece of driftwood. If the AI trade does go pop……………………
I'm noticing the growing possibility that Europe becomes very poor in the course of the next 10-20 years. You have the following factors:
- Heavy industry totally uncompetitive against China, automakers etc. rapidly losing ground
- Services industry totally uncompetitive against AI
- No natural resources, or regulatory hurdles making their extraction impossible
- No access to the new economy (no AI, no data centers, uncompetitive energy sector)
- Client states caught in one-way welfare ratchets, spend reallocation + investment well-nigh impossible
This seems under-contemplated. And we're talking really, seriously dirt poor: taken to its logical conclusion, many countries will have much, much smaller services and manufacturing industries -- economies may become much more heavily skewed toward natural resources and energy markets, where Europe has made it impossible for itself to compete.
And I'm not saying that this is likely to happen, it's an extreme case. But the probability is greater than zero and appears to be growing. The EV of that is so negative that it's surprising to me that it's not coming up more.
Physicist here.
This is nonsense. We know what it takes to have such reactions. These kind of neutron bombardment nuclear reactions were studied and understood more then 50 years ago. We know the energy per reaction, the probability of it occur (we call these cross sections) and the branching ratios (when you bombard a target you make a soup of various elements, so further processing is required to separate the elements). The bombarded target is so radioactive, you have to store it for many years.
Here are the theoretical limit (ideal case) numbers. To make 1 oz of gold, you need to bombard 21 kg of mercury. To get enough neutrons for it, again, theoretical limit, you need 2.8 lbs of pure U-235, or 390 lbs of natural uranium, which is mostly U-238. At current prices, the raw materials ALONE (21 kg of mercury and 390 lbs of uranium) cost $33k ($2k for mercury, $31k for uranium). And we're not talking about the need to have a working nuclear freaking reactor, chemical separation afterwards (with 1 oz of gold you also make 1/3 oz of thallium, which is extremely toxic). This is the ideal theoretical case when everything is assumed to work with 100% efficiency.
To call this scheme a threat to gold mining is ridiculous.
@beverleyturner They have now realised how dependent we are on imported energy / food etc. due to insane government policies, and they are getting their excuses in early. It was Putin you see, oh, and Trump.
@Trailer_Swift69 Fucked if I can work it out - they are putting lives at risk, including their own. You don’t see it happening at Aldi when someone pushes a trolley past a shopper dawdling in the middle aisle. I bet it’s the same people who have their savings in cash as they’re ‘risk averse.’
Today’s Treasury rally may be signaling something far more consequential than a recession still somewhere on the horizon. The economy has already been deteriorating beneath headline statistics, and a recession may well be underway before official data recognize it. If Treasury yields continue falling while corporate credit spreads widen, hiring weakens and investment contracts, it would suggest that existing economic deterioration is spreading into a broader financial and credit contraction.
US Long Bond yields peaked on October 7th (30 year). We need more structural technical evidence but a very good chance we have a significant cycle high in yields.
What if someone launched the opposite of the situational awareness fund. Call it the discombobulation fund and perform the absolute dumbest trades you can think of on purpose. $TLT is at all time lows? Go max short $TLT.
@NormanBrennan I replied to a similar post pointing out that the poster behind the officer was referring to an attachment with firearms. It was clearly beyond some people to pick up on this clue. I was once photographed on a horse, but no one would expect me to ride it around Aintree.
