Sharmila Dhankar’s journey is a powerful testament to the indomitable spirit of India’s #NariShakti.
Abused and abandoned by her alcoholic first husband for giving birth to two daughters, she was forced out of her home when her younger child was just 37 days old. Yet, adversity could not define her. She rebuilt her life with the unwavering support of her parents.
Her second marriage marked a new beginning. Encouraged by her husband to pursue sports, Sharmila discovered her true calling, and never looked back.
From finishing fourth at the CWG 2022 to winning gold at the Fazza International Para Athletics Championships 2026, and now at CWG2026, she has etched her name in history as India’s first-ever para athlete to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Her greatest victory, however, extends beyond the podium. Her daughters, now aspiring athletes themselves, a javelin thrower and a long jumper, dream of representing India and winning medals with their mother.
Sharmila’s story is more than one of sporting excellence. It is the story of a courageous woman who turned pain into purpose, challenges into strength, and courage into sporting history.

She reminds us that when a woman refuses to surrender, no force can stop her rise. No glass ceiling is too high for her. No medal is beyond her mettle.
