China explores new way to produce rubber

Chinese scientists have turned a dandelion-like weed into a potential new source of natural rubber — a breakthrough that could reduce China’s dependence on imports, the SCMP reports.

🔸 The plant, also known as Taraxacum kok-saghyz, produces rubber with the same molecular structure as Brazilian rubber trees

🔸 The dandelion can be harvested within just a year and can grow in salty, alkaline soil where traditional crops struggle

🔸 Researchers extracted 40kg of natural rubber from 1 ton of dried roots harvested in a test field in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region – a modest yet promising start for further progress

🔸 Gene-editing efforts have increased the plant’s rubber content from 12% naturally to nearly 30%

From tires and aerospace seals to medical gloves, natural rubber is a strategic resource — and China’s push to grow it in harsh Xinjiang conditions could reshape the global supply chain.
