Wasn't the central premise of the GOP's 2016 campaign that because of Democratic rule America was no longer great -- was by some accounts analogous to a flight seized by Al Qaeda terrorists -- and that a vote for Trump was necessary to make it great again?

Tariffs will increase the number of certain kinds of jobs and the wages of the workers in those jobs. But it will lower the overall standard of living because it means producing goods at a higher cost than before. Self-sufficiency is the road to poverty. We trade with the rest of the world because it enormously expands what we can enjoy materially. If you try to make everything yourself, yes, you will have all the jobs and be desperately poor.
