Simply giving possession means the team still has incentive to foul and remove time from the clock. Allowing for the option of possession vs another point gives the shooting team the option to turn it into a free throw contest if they want.

Best way to take away any incentive to foul when up - for non shooting fouls under 2 minutes allow the team to choose if they want to take a 2nd free throw or retain possession. Gives the team that was fouled options depending on scenario.

@DaneMooreNBA Wouldn't average plus minus per game be a better metric? Normalize it out per 36 minutes and then average that across games played?
