Genuine greatness should not be judged solely by results and the number of medals and titles won. Style of play, and the ability to make difficult technical skills look easy should also be a factor. So too longevity, not just the ability to win the Olympic or world title, but the ability to maintain the highest-level, tournament after tournament, year after year. Conduct and sportsmanship shown, regardless of success or failure; and legacy, the influence the athlete has on the sport should also all be considerations when defining true greatness.
Any athlete who fulfils all those criteria has a genuine claim to be referred to as GREAT and perhaps even the G.O.A.T.
If ever a badminton player exemplified all these attributes, it’s Hendra Setiawan.
His playing record speaks for itself. Olympic Gold. 4 x World Champion. 2 x Asian Games Gold. 2 x Asian Champion, 2 x All England winner. But perhaps most remarkable of all, he contested at least 1 final every year for 23 consecutive years.
But Setiawan will be remembered for far more than just his outstanding playing record. Obviously adaptable having achieved success with more than one partner, he made the technically complex sport look easy and effortless. A natural and elegant player with amazing anticipation, especially at the net. He had great deception due to his relaxed hitting technique, and astute awareness of where to place the shot, making him tactically clever and wise. He appeared calm and nerveless, yet resilient and reliable when under pressure. And he always displayed great sportsmanship, humble in victory, yet generous in defeat.
In other words, he was
🇭 Humble
🇪 Elegant
🇳 Nerveless
🇩 Deceptive
🇷 Reliable
🇦 Astute
🇸 Sporting
🇪 Effortless
🇹 Tactical
🇮 Inspirational
🇦 Amazing Anticipation
🇼 Wise
🇦 Adaptable
🇳 Natural
I suppose all good things must come to an end, but anyone who’s witnessed Hendra’s ability on a #badminton court will miss him terribly, as it’s finally the end of a remarkable era.
Hendra Setiawan’s outstanding career, and his style of play has inspired a generation. What an amazing legacy.
Happy retirement to a true GREAT of the game.

Understand that some of us may feel sad and frustrated of the situation. But let's keep in mind that no one is as sad as the athlete himself facing this situation. Let's just face whatever the outcome is and support our national athlete instead of spreading negative comments and words.
We can do this together Malaysians 🇲🇾
We are all human beings who will make mistakes. Tough luck but we are still by your side Dato Azizul! 🫂
