We just won $100,000 at the Build with Gemini XPRIZE and I am so overwhelmed.

When the competition started we kept asking ourselves what we should build, and eventually I asked, what about Nigeria? I thought about my mum, who has been a tailor for more than 30 years and practically raised my twin sister and me on that income. It was hard sometimes, because her customer base was so small, and she would often wait weeks before a customer paid for a completed job. In Nigeria this is a huge problem for a population where most of the employment sector is made up of artisans. So we built MyFixam, the marketplace where you can find and book verified artisans and pay straight on the app.

The competition had more than 26,000 participants and 1,400 projects. On Friday I pitched live at Moonshot Live, the Oscars for optimism, in front of more than 1,500 people, to judges Cathie Wood, Palmer Luckey, Mark Pincus, Anousheh Ansari and Logan Kilpatrick. To make it to the top 3, I am more than grateful.

He said, ‘Win the Ballon d’Or one day. You’re a goalscorer, you work hard and you have many years. I would be proud to see you with one.’

I told him, ‘Coming from you, that means a lot.’

Then he said, ‘But not everything I did is there for you to copy. Some records you can leave alone.’

I said, ‘Which ones?’

He said, ‘Erling, we play soon. I’ve already said too much.’”
