Haiti just made a tough new rule for its upcoming elections, Article 153.

Anyone who wants to run for president, parliament, or local office must swear in front of a notary that they have never been arrested, or convicted in Haiti or anywhere else for serious crimes like corruption, sexual violence, drug trafficking, kidnapping, or anything similar.

The government says this will stop criminals from getting into politics. Haiti has had big problems with corrupt leaders and gangs.

Right now, a huge number of political parties (316) are getting ready to run in the election.

Some people think the new rule is good. It will bring in better leaders and help people trust the government again.

Others say it’s too harsh. It counts arrests, not just guilty verdicts. In Haiti, arrests are sometimes used for political revenge, so the rule could unfairly block good candidates, be used to attack opponents, or steal elections.

In the end, it depends on how the rule is used. It could make elections better by keeping out bad people or make them worse by limiting who can run.
