This is one example from a bunch of MBBS doctors online who are actively creating a scare about rabies. Doctors like him are responsible for spreading paranoia about rabies & inciting hatred against stray dogs.

Get the facts straight 'da':

- Rodents & bats are the primary carriers of rabies. Dogs get infected by contact with carriers or through interactions with an infected dog/animal.

- not all stray dogs carry rabies, a dog has to be infected with rabies to transmit it through a bite. In reality, only a tiny fraction of dogs could be infected with rabies. Not every stray dog has rabies - get that clear.

- Rabies in every dog is 100% preventable if dogs are vaccinated from 3 months age with an annual booster every year. All of us do this with our pet dogs and many organisations are doing the same for street dogs.

- India being a country where rabies is endemic - every bite by rodent, bat, dog, cat or any animal must be treated with the protocol for rabies as yes, rabies is 100% fatal once the infection sets in.

- Rabies is 100% preventable if treatment by established protocol is administered in time. Rabies deaths in India only happen because patients reach medical centres very late and/or because of poor knowledge & clinical skills in MBBS doctors to assess bites to use the right protocols.

- Further government and some private medical facilities are guilty of improper storage and handling of rabies vaccines & immunoglobulin. This damaged or expired stock when used on patients results in negative outcomes.

- Rabies is 100% preventable by pre-bite prophylaxis (unless it's a severe bite when minimal post-bite treatment might also be needed). None of these doctors will ever tell you this. For as low as ₹1,000 you can take 2 injections of rabies vaccine in 7 days. All of us who regularly work with animals do PEP.

I'll be calling out every single doctor who peddles rubbish henceforth.

This is not only inhumane but highly impractical unless the aim is mass killing. With 6+ lakh dogs & shelter space for only a fraction, this will fail.
Solution: target aggressive/rabies cases, sterilize, vaccinate & monitor - humane, legal, effective.
