🚨 WE JUST DISCOVERED SOMEONE WAS “SELLING” RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES TO IMGs

A member of the Project IMG community recently brought this to our attention.

An individual had been promoting paid research positions within our network, offering remote research opportunities to IMGs.

When the member asked about the next steps, the response was:

“U have to pay and you ll get your name enrolled in the paper.”

The conversation also stated:

“Payment after paper submission.”

🚩 This raises serious ethical and academic integrity concerns.

There is an important distinction between paying for legitimate research training, mentorship, statistical support, or other clearly defined research services — and paying for a position on a manuscript or for your name to be included as an author.

Authorship in scientific research is expected to be based on meaningful scholarly contribution, not simply payment.

For IMGs, this is particularly concerning because publications can play an important role in building an academic career. People should not feel that they need to buy their way onto a paper to become competitive.

At Project IMG, we believe research opportunities should be:

✅ Transparent
✅ Academically legitimate
✅ Supervised by qualified investigators
✅ Based on meaningful contribution
✅ Compliant with research ethics and authorship standards

Before paying for any research opportunity, ask:

🔴 Who is the PI or supervising investigator?
🔴 What institution is involved?
🔴 What exactly will you be doing?
🔴 What are the authorship criteria?
🔴 What journal or conference is involved?
🔴 What exactly are you paying for?

Your research record becomes part of your professional reputation.

Don’t pay for something you don’t fully understand.

If you receive similar offers through our community, please document the interaction and bring it to the attention of the appropriate moderators.

Research should be built on contribution, mentorship, and academic integrity — not simply on who can pay.
