1) Singapore has about 228 km of MRT and LRT.

2) Klang Valley now has about 249 km of urban rail, after adding the 38.6 km Shah Alam Line.

3) So Klang Valley already has a slightly longer rail network than Singapore.

4) But daily ridership is very different:

✓Singapore: about 3.7 million trips/day
✓Klang Valley: about 1.0 million trips/day

5) Singapore carries almost 4 times more passengers, despite having a shorter rail network.

6) Per kilometre of rail:

✓Singapore: ~16,000 trips/km/day
✓Klang Valley: ~4,000 trips/km/day

7) This matters because rail is expensive not only to build.
It is also expensive to operate.

8) Every day, we still have to pay for:

•Trains
•Stations
•Electricity
•Staff
•Signalling
•Repairs
•Maintenance

9) If ridership is low, fare collection will also be low.
That means taxpayers must keep paying more to support the system.

10) So before spending another RM45–50 billion on MRT3, we should ask:

✓Why is our existing 249 km rail network carrying so few passengers compared with Singapore?

11) Maybe our biggest problem is not lack of rail.
Maybe the real problem is that we have not built a good enough public transport system around the rail.

12. We need:

✓Better bus networks
✓Better feeder services
✓Easy transfers
✓Shorter waiting time
✓Reliable first-mile and last-mile connections

13) Singapore did not succeed by building rail alone.
It built a complete public transport network.

14) Malaysia should first make our existing rail system work much harder before building another very expensive line.

15) The problem is not just kilometres of track.
The problem is passengers per kilometre.

Note : Don't forget that we have about 200km of Komuter Lines that is not fully utilised.
