The "Green" Paradox: Clean energy needs minerals (cobalt, lithium), but is Africa repeating the old extractive story? Dr Ross Harvey tackles this question in his article featured in the latest AIF issue.

Many nations, having democratised to some degree or another, now face "democratic backsliding," failing the fundamental "turnover test" of a peaceful transfer of power. Tanzania is a prime example, classified as a "Hybrid Regime" by the EIU as its ruling party (the CCM) systematically renders the opposition unable to compete. Dr Ross Harvey argues that this shift toward authoritarianism is fundamentally changing the operating environment for long-term investors like mining firms. While seemingly easier to operate in the short term, the historical data is clear: successful democratisation wins the day for aggregate economic performance. New amendments to South Africa’s minerals law have just been gazetted and are under scrutiny. Dr Ross Harvey of Good Governance Africa offers crucial perspectives. Speaking with CapeTalk’s John Maytham, Harvey examines the controversial MPRDA amendments, explaining why industry critics are likening them to the rejected "Zwane Bill." His observations highlight significant concerns about the current draft, making his analysis vital for those tracking South Africa's resource policies: https://t.co/ImckRlTFjY

@RanaimuyeN The US economy was worth US$22 trillion in 2023. China? US$17 trillion in the same year. Per capita: US at US$74,500 in 2023. China? US$22,137 in the same year. https://t.co/RYs7Zdr3jd
We look forward to hearing @CyrilRamaphosa address the nation on Thursday evening. In a geopolitically fragmented world, the task is daunting. At @GGA_org, we've put together some pre-#SONA25 considerations: https://t.co/QYaYdirEg2 Let us know what you think.
https://t.co/j1wphXeMDS Whether it would help the most endangered rhinos is another question. My somewhat cretinous fellow Chinese are the ones who must be educated out of their fantasies of rhino horns being powerful aphrodisiac.
After 58 years in power, Botswana’s BDP has been defeated, and outgoing President Mokgweetsi Masisi has conceded defeat.
That is how it should be in a democracy.
Congratulations, Botswana and the winners, and all the best to the incoming president and his team.
The defeat of the BDP has significant consequences not only for Botswana but for the SADC region, as Gaborone is the seat of the regional body, SADC.
This is the organisation that has been endorsing rigged elections and failing to uphold electoral protocols for the region.
The only liberation party in the countries surrounding Zimbabwe is the ANC in South Africa, which has supported rigged elections too in Zimbabwe.
We hope the ANC leadership will reflect on their conduct.
With Botswana and Zambia embracing new dispensations, the Zimbabwean opposition now has allies who understand the pain of repression, corrupt rule, and abuse of power.
What has happened in Botswana is only possible when there is unity of purpose among genuine forces for change, rather than selfish, ego driven politics.
Congratulations to the Botswana defence force and all the security organs of Botswana for remaining professional and not being used to thwart the will of the people!
Congratulations to Mr. Duma Gideon Boko on your victory in 🇧🇼’s Presidential elections! We commend the Batswana for fair & peaceful elections and outgoing President Masisi for ensuring a smooth transfer of power. Look forward to continued cooperation with the new leadership.🇿🇲🇧🇼
