எம்ஜியார் போல ஒரு நடிகர் தமிழ் நாட்டு முதல்வர் ஆவது என்பது இனிமேல் நடக்காத காரியம் என்று தான் நான் கடந்த 20-30 வருடங்களாக நினைத்திருந்தேன்.

காரணம், எல்லோருக்கும் பரவலான கல்வி. அந்தக் கல்வியால் மக்களுக்குக் கிடைத்த எக்ஸ்போஷரால், சினிமாவில் வருவதெல்லாம் நிஜ வாழ்வில் நடக்காது என்று உணர்ந்த ஒரு கற்றறிந்த தலைமுறை தான் இங்கு இருக்கிறது என்று எண்ணியது, தவிர சினிமா என்னும் பொழுது போக்குத் தொழிலையும், அரசியல் என்ற மிக அத்தியாவசியமான செயல்முறையையும் படித்த இந்தத் தலைமுறையினர் குழப்பிக் கொள்ள மாட்டார்கள் என்று நினைத்தது.

தவிர விஜயகாந்த், கமல்ஹாசன் போன்ற நடிகர்களின் தோல்வி, மற்றும் திமுக கூட்டணிக்குக் கிடைத்த தொடர் நாடாளுமன்ற, சட்டமன்றத் தேர்தல் வெற்றிகள், பாஜகவை ஒதுக்கி ஒன்றுமில்லாமல் வ��த்திருந்தது, ஆகியவை தமிழ்நாடு சரியான பாதையில் தான் போய்க் கொண்டிருக்கிறது என்ற எண்ணத்தைக் கொடுத்தது.

ஆனால், விஜயின் வருகை தான் இதெல்லாம் வெறும் பூச்சு என்பதையும், அடியாழத்தில் மக்கள் 70-80 களில் இருந்த கல்வியறிவு குறைந்த மக்களைவிட சிந்தனாசக்தி அற்றவர்களாக, கல்வியின் பலன் எள் முனையளவும் சிந்தனையை மேம்படுத்தாத மக்களாகத் தான் வாழ்ந்து வருகிறார்கள் என்ற உண்மையைச் செவிட்டில் அ���ைந்து சொல்லி இருக்கிறது.

எம்ஜியாரைத் தேர்வு செய்ததில் கூட ஒரு நியாயம் இருக்கிறது. அவர் வெறும் நடிகராக மட்டும் இல்லை, ஒரு தத்துவத்தை, கொள்கையைத் தன் படங்களின் மூலம் பல ஆண்டுகள் பரப்பியவராக, நேரடி அரசியலில் பங்கு பெற்றவராக, அரசு இயந்திரத்தை அருகில் இருந்து பார்த்தவராக, அனுபவம் பெற்றவராக இருந்திருக்கிறார். அவருடன் அனுபவசாலிகளும் உடன் இருந்தார்கள். அவரால் ஒரு அரசைத் திறம்பட ந���ர்வாகம் செய்ய இயலும் என்று மக்கள் நம்பியதில் ஒரு நியாயம் இருக்கிறது. ஜெயலலிதாவுக்கும் கட்சியில் ஆட்சியில் அனுபவம் இருந்தது. வெறும் சினிமா நடிகை என்று மட்டும் சொல்லி விட முடியாது. கொபசெவாக நியமித்ததில் ஆரம்பித்து, அரசியலில் கொஞ்சமாவது அனுபவம் பெற்றவராக, அரசியல் அறிந்தவர்களால் அரசியல் கற்பிக்கப் பட்டவராக இருந்தார்.

ஆனால், பிரச்சாரம் செய்யக்கூடப் பொறுப்பில்லாமல் லீவு எடுத்துக் கொண்டு வீட்டில் படுத்துகொண்டிருந்த ஒருவரை, ஆறு மணிக்கு மேல் வெளியே காணவே இயலாத ஒருவரை, 20 தொகுதிக்கு மேல் மக்களைச் சென்று சந்திக்காத ஒருவரை, வேட்பாளர்களாக அதிக பட்சமாக கிரிமினல்களையும், பொய்யர்களையும், சுத்தமாக அரசு இயந்திரம் என்றால் என்ன, அரசியல் என்றால் என்ன என்றே அறியாத தற்குறிகளையும் நியமித்த ஒருவரால் அரசை நடத்த முடியும் என்று நம்பி இந்த மக்கள் வாக்களித்திருக்கிறார்களே, அதுவும் கடந்த 106 வருடங்களில் த��ிழகம் காணாத மிகச் சிறந்த அரசை நடத்தியவர்களைத் தூக்கி எறிந்து வாக்களித்திருக்கிறார்களே, இந்த மக்களை என்ன சொல்வது?

சத்தியமாக இவ்வளவு முட்டாள்களாக இந்த மக்கள் இருப்பார்கள் என்று நான் கனவில��ம் நினைக்கவில்லை! இவர்களுக்குக் கல்வி என்ன தான் செய்தது என்ற கேள்வி மனதிற்குள் ஓடிக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறது....

Bear with me… this is a long post.

I am trying to process, in my own mind, the moment we are going through and the many responses I am seeing on social media. This is my stream of consciousness.

What we are witnessing is uncomfortable even for me, a longstanding critic of RW. For four decades, Ranil Wickremesinghe has been a constant in our politics. Love him or loathe him, seeing him in a courtroom, remanded, is a visceral jolt. It feels like the ground is shifting, because for so long we’ve been conditioned to believe that those at the top like presidents, ministers, tycoons, the political and economic elite are untouchable.

But this discomfort is exactly what accountability looks like. It’s what we fought for during the Aragalaya.

For the first time in our history, we are seeing the separation of powers in action. the judiciary, the legislature, and the presidency operating as co-equal branches of the state, rather than one subjugating the others. For decades, courts bent to the will of executive power, legislatures rubber stamped that power, and the people were left voiceless. What we are witnessing now is not chaos. It is what a republic is supposed to look like when the law is allowed to stand above personality, party & privilege.

We often hold up Lee Kuan Yew & Singapore as the gold standard of leadership & governance. But we forget that his first act in building a clean, credible state was to dismantle entrenched sources of corruption even when it meant taking on powerful loyalists and allies. He understood that there could be no prosperity without integrity & no growth without accountability. What we are seeing here, however imperfectly, is the beginning of that same reckoning in Sri Lanka. If we are serious about building a republic worthy of trust, then accountability cannot be optional or selective.

IMO this is not about vengeance or humiliation as many claim. It is about building the principle that no one is above the law... not presidents, not ministers, not even those who were once seen as the "only adult in the room." If we cannot hold even the smallest infractions to account because we are afraid of how it looks, then we will never break the culture of impunity that has bankrupted our economy, hollowed out our institutions, and stolen opportunity from generations of Sri Lankans. Most of all, where is the incentive for leaders to change their behavior if they continue to feel invincible? That facade is now, finally, cracked.

Every nation that has successfully confronted corruption and entrenched power has gone through a moment like this... a moment where someone who seemed untouchable was finally held to account. It’s painful, it’s divisive, and it feels destabilizing but these moments are what reset the balance of power & put a country on a different path.

So yes, it is uncomfortable to watch. But if we are serious about change, reform, and accountability, we cannot flinch now.

And yet, this moment also carries a warning for the NPP government. If this is to be more than symbolism, they must walk the walk. Those within their own ranks who face allegations of corruption must step away until those issues are resolved. The promises they made to abolish the executive presidency, to repeal draconian laws, to deliver meaningful transitional justice must be honored.
Only then will we know if we have built a government of integrity, a truly independent judiciary and legislature, and a country where the rule of law is supreme.
