Final day of the June #10daysofchronicles writing challenge!
There is a small, yet mighty, group of us turning our chronicles and research into longer family history writing this summer.
We are meeting two Thursdays a month. Want to join in? DM me for details.

Found myself going down he rabbit hole of reading Conshohocken Borough Council updates when I learned my ancestor George Geiger served from 1918-1926. #10daysofchronicles

My ancestor John Wilmer started his dairy when he was 54 years old, in 1895.
I'm 56 years old this year, and the thought of beginning a farming operation seems overwhelming.
However his oldest 3 sons were 25, 19 and 17 at the time, so perhaps that's why. #10daysofchronicles
The dairy went out of business suddenly in 1950. These bottles were in people's homes from their final delivery of milk.
Strangers passed them down and 70 years later I was able to find them on the internet after searching flea markets for decades.2/2 #10daysofchronicles

My one ancestral artifact I'm proud to possess is milk bottles from Wilmer Dairies. These quart bottles are all from Ebay. One was painted by the owner and I've yet to tackle removing it. 1/2 #10daysofchronicles

Researching in 30 years tax records for Montgomery County, I discovered an evolution of my ancestor's surname. He goes from John Wolman, to John Wolmer, to John Wilmer which is the name he died with. #10daysofchronicles

The income was from iron mining was $150 a year during the Civil War and until 1867, then leveled off at $100 most years.
This allowed him to buy 5 acres of land, 1 horse, and 1 cow.3/#10daysofchronicles
My ancestor John Wilmer was taxed as a "laborer" from 1863-1889. It is only from his obituary in 1929 that identifies what the labor was - mining iron on neighbor's farm.1/ #10daysofchronicles

My ancestor Horace Wilmer who ran a 63 acre dairy business only completed 8th grade.
He also worked 52 weeks a year, and 60 hours a week.
These facts are on 1940 census & make me picture him a whole different way. #10daysofchronicles

Wilmer Dairies made it through by mortgaging the property. When WW2 occurred, local food production mattered and the government worked with farmers, and the dairy survived.
But post-war, everything flipped back. By 1950 the dairy was bankrupt. 5/ #10daysofchronicles

The often repeated story at family gatherings was our family's dairy business went bankrupt because of fighting between family members.
The actual cause was the implementation of new government regulations 1/ #10daysofchronicles
