The Air Corps had an Air Purifier in service which was originally installed in 1996 which for years was NOT serviced as per the manufacturer’s recommendations i.e at six monthly intervals. Wait for it the best yet to come. This very same Air Purifier was scrapped on the 18 of August 2003 Scrap Cert Report (SCR)No 03/02. Some years later it was put back into service. It was eventually inspected in 2024 and was found to be in an extremely poor state and was immediately condemned. Work that one out. The manufacturer of this Air Purifier suggests that it has a safe life span of 15 years, this obviously would be subject to its condition and whether or not it had been serviced as per the manufacturer’s recommendations i.e at six month intervals. The implications of the aforementioned is that the personnel using air fed masks fed by this Air Purifier were potentially breathing contaminated air, yet to the best of my Knowledge not one of these personnel have been notified of the potential risks to their health, this is a serious failure of duty of care and highly disrespectful to the personnel involved. It is extremely questionable as to whether or not the Air Corps has a functioning health and safety culture. Nothing seems to have changed since I made a protected disclosure to the minister and a complaint to the HSA in 2016 in which I highlighted serious failing in health and safety pertaining to the use of dangerous chemicals in the Air Corps. An important point to note is that Not one commissioned officer used an air fed mask fed by this Air Purifier. Yet again not one person is held accountable for the above. In the Defence Force’s it would be extremely unusual if not for an item that was scrapped to be put back into service.
