Swami Nirmalananda lived in BR Hills in Karnataka. He had spent eleven years in silence. He worshipped his God only with fallen flowers — he would not pluck a single one from his plants. He would not pluck fruit from a tree either. He took only what had already fallen.
That is how he was.
Sadhguru first met him when he was twenty-one — arriving at the ashram after five days alone in the forest, covered in mud and slush, riding his motorcycle straight up the twenty-five steps of the ashram because he was too hungry to bother getting off. He asked Nirmalananda for food. Nirmalananda — a man revered across Karnataka — came out and touched his feet. Sadhguru was deeply embarrassed. He just wanted bread. He ate the bread and honey and left.
Years later, in April 1996, Sadhguru returned with Vijji and their daughter Radhe. During that visit, Nirmalananda made an announcement: he wanted to leave the following January, at the onset of Uttarayana. He was seventy-three. He was in tears. He had already built a small samadhi space for himself — but he did not know how to do it. He had questions he could not answer.
What was a casual visit became something else entirely.
Sadhguru opened up to him in a way he had never spoken anywhere — going into precise detail about how to prepare, what to do, what not to do. Vijji sat through the entire conversation and wept without stopping.
By December, Nirmalananda had publicly announced the date. Rationalists in Karnataka launched a press campaign calling it glorified suicide. The government posted two policemen in his ashram.
When Sadhguru visited him one last time, he broke down. He said: I do not even pluck a flower from my plant. And they put police on me.
He was supposed to leave on January 15th. He left on the 10th — five days early, fearing the rationalists would come and make a spectacle.
He sat outside his cottage on a bench. A few minutes before noon, in the presence of a small crowd — he simply left.
A man who would not hurt a plant.
