Kansas police chief Gideon Cody thought The Marion County Record, co-owned Eric Meyer and 98 yo Joan Meyer, was going to publish a story about him leaving his last job after serious allegations of sexual misconduct. The newspaper's offices were raided by the police, who took all of the equipment and confiscated personal cellphones. Joan Meyer died hours after the 'smash-and-grab.' There appears to be no justification in the warrant for the breadth and intrusiveness of the search. Turns out restaurant owner Kari Newell, who was trying to get a liquor license, had a DUI in her past, and thought the paper would publish that information.
