One of the beautiful things about investing in equities is that, from time to time, markets do things that make absolutely no sense. That’s exactly why stocks remain the greatest wealth creation tool in existence. Let me explain. In 2008, Transocean operated a fleet of 132 rigs. Most of the fleet consisted of jackups, which earned much lower dayrates. That year, they reported $4.2 billion in net income. The stock traded close to $150. Fast forward to today. Following the pending merger with Valaris, the combined company will have 73 rigs. 31 of those are jackups. The rest are high spec ultra deepwater and semi submersibles commanding premium dayrates. I believe that despite being smaller, this fleet is actually better than the old one because the rigs are modern and mostly ultra deepwater units of the latest generation. In my base case, this fleet can generate $3 billion in annual free cash flow. In a more optimistic scenario, that number could reach $5 to $6 billion. $rig $val
