According to a report today from CNN, it was the Trump Administration who first reached out to Qatar regarding the purchase/transfer of one of its Boeing 747-8s as a temporary replacement for Air Force One, despite President Trump and other officials describing the deal as a “gift” originally offered by Qatar. Discussions are said to be ongoing between lawyers at the U.S. Department of Defense and the Qatari Defense Ministry regarding the transfer, with officials stating that the retrofit and installation of the required security and communications equipment on the plane could take two years and cost multiples of what the plane itself is worth; with the first of two VC-25Bs from Boeing likely to be close to delivery by the time the retrofit is completed in 2027.
