There's something special about the arrival of June. The days are longer, nature is bursting with life, and for years it has marked the return of one of my favourite traditions: #30DaysOfNature.
There are also some other exciting developments on the horizon... but more on that a little later.
Each June, I celebrate the month by sharing my encounters with the natural world, moments of beauty, wonder, and discovery that remind us to slow down and appreciate the world around us.
And what a way to begin.
Today's discovery beautifully showcases nature's resilience: a pelargonium (a cousin of the geranium) growing from a crevice in a tree trunk.
In itself, it was a stunning sight. But what makes it even more remarkable is how it got there.
The feathery seeds of a pelargonium are designed to ride the wind, much like a dandelion. But their journey doesn't end when they land. If a seed becomes lodged in a crack in the bark, its tail twists and untwists with changes in humidity, slowly drilling the seed deeper into the crevice where it can take hold and grow.
Nature is full of remarkable ingenuity.
A wonderful reminder that even the smallest things in nature are equipped to overcome challenges, adapt, and thrive.

Ever noticed a bump on stems in the woods? They are large and hard and home to the goldenrod gall fly! The larva triggers the plant to form a gall, hibernates inside all winter, then bursts out in spring to mate and start the cycle again. Nature is wild. #30DaysofNature

Did you see it? I captured this yesterday evening after the storm. DYK? A rainbow is actually a full circle of light and we see only half from the ground. What's more, like life, no 2 people see the exact same rainbow, since it depends on your unique viewpoint! #30DaysofNature
Discovered wild raspberries on Day 23 of my #30DaysofNature!
These vibrant berries are packed with benefits. They're nutritious, support wildlife, & are used in natural remedies for their anti-inflammatory properties. A paradise for pollinators, they also boost biodiversity!
After the rain we spotted this American toad in our backyard. DYK? These little ones can eat up to 1,000 insects in a single night? Theyโre vital for keeping our ecosystem balanced. Feeling grateful for the simple joys of nature. This is day 20 of my #30DaysofNature #Amphibians
A "fiery" hot discovery on dayย 16 of my #30DaysofNature.ย Known as the Red Hot Poker or Torch Lily, this plant originates from South Africa. Itโs not just a show stopper for us, itโs a nectar treat forย hummingbirds & butterflies with their clusters of small, tube-shaped blooms.
So cool! I was fascinated watching this nymph Praying Mantis, & yes got it on a pencil to show the size - nymphs hatch at about 4mm long & already resemble adults. They are the only insects in the world that can turn their heads a full 180 Degrees. Day 13 of #30DaysofNature
Look at this Eastern Cottontail we captured on our walk from school this afternoon. DYK? They can run up to 29km/hr, communicate by stamping their hind feet and often return to the same location day after day. This is Day 11 of my #30DaysofNature

For us city slickers, this is always a special encounter. We were delighted to see this deer while on a walk just moments ago. When startled the white tailed deer will flip their tail up revealing the white underside.

Did you know thereโs a connection between human blood & the blue of robinโs eggs? The same molecule, biliverdin, thatโs responsible for the greenish-blue colour in a bruise is also what gives robinโs #eggs their blue hue. Nature, so much to love and learn. #30DaysofNature
Just prepping dinner and the kids pulled these #Radishes from the home garden! In ancient Greece radishes were so highly regarded that gold replicas were made in their honour as an offering to the Greek god, Apollo. I โค๏ธradishes! #Homegrown #Organic

My annual #30DaysofNature begins today - personal encounters that I am excited to share with you. What a start- this is a short-tailed weasel. Clever & fearless critters, all 3 species in ON change colour from brown to white to provide camouflage in winter. #LoveNature
Amazing! Some call them "Dinosaur Birds" - with good reason as fossil records of Herons date back millions of years. Great blue herons have specialized feathers on their chest that will fray into a powder, designed to help them clean off fish slime after a meal! #30DaysofNature
