This solo shoe, found under the floorboards of the Pension Building, reflects an old superstition that hiding shoes in a building as its being built will ward off evil. Our shoes are are all single shoes, men’s and women’s, from various socioeconomic levels. #40artifacts #40years

Fragile, rare, and heavy; the 4,000 glass negatives in our Wurts Brothers Photography Archive are stored vertically to prevent cracking and are kept in one of our colder storage areas. Captured here is the Ellerslie estate, home of Levi P. Morton, 22nd VP. #40artifacts #40years

The Museum’s collection includes this plaster model used as an aid in carving a gargoyle of the Greek god Pan for the Washington National Cathedral. The gargoyle, designed by Frederick Hart and carved by Malcolm Harlow, is on the @WNCathedral West Front. #40artifacts #40years

This 1936 Art Moderne embossed stainless steel elevator door panel was salvaged from the Heurich Building in DC. A couple renovating their bathroom asked the Museum for pictures and permission to use it as inspiration for their frosted glass shower door! #40artifacts #40years

The Museum houses this Frank Gehry model that was chosen by the Corcoran Gallery of Art to add onto their DC museum. The model shows his signature of billowing forms clad in brushed stainless steel. The project was canceled after funds couldn't be raised. #40artifacts #40years

The Museum's Great Hall has hosted inaugural balls for 14 presidents, with the first happening in 1885 before the building was completed. Robert Zimmerman was hired to design George H.W. Bush’s 1989 ball. Here’s a concept sketch he made for decorations. #40artifacts #40years

While Lincoln Logs are a well-known children’s building toy, many people aren't aware they were designed by John Lloyd Wright. He invented them while working in Tokyo on the Imperial Hotel, which was designed with interlocking log beams in its foundation. #40artifacts #40years
