In honor of this being the last day of football season, and thus the final game in my friend David Sharapan's final season alive, I thought it would only be appropriate to pay homage to him with a "Story Time" from the book.
Today, I went to the South Point, where I used to work for a brief time in 2019. The VSiN studio opened there in 2017 and through that programming and those people (including Sports Gambling Hall of Famer Vinny Magliulo), I found out that one day a year, 82-year old owner Michael Gaughan's son Brendan (who was once a NASCAR driver, Georgetown Hoya basketball walk-on and I-AA all-conference placekicker) works the counter at the sportsbook - the one furthest away from director Chris Andrews's office closest to the hot dog stand.
Today is that day.
Super Bowl Sunday.
Every year.
As luck would have it, I ended up at Brendan's window but had to move over one to handle a couple of clerical issues with my mobile account. Turns out he's got family members (a couple or three I think) who were also working down there today, all of who seemed respectable and polite as well. Ended up chatting with Brendan briefly between customers he was dealing with, including a middle-aged short lady who he called "darlin'", followed by none other than @BillKrackman, when Vinny ambled over to greet all of us.
Michael's South Point is an absolute gem and I feel so lucky to live to close to it and be able to go in there whenever... but the place is almost ALWAYS packed. Ryan Growney is a real sharp dude and it's no accident that he has seen the overseen the great heights that the SP has grown into during his time as the general manager there. But Brendan working on Super Bowl Sunday every year is certainly typical of how the Gaughan family has always operated in this town since Jackie moved here in 1950, and I feel very fortunate to be even a small part of that history.
I only wish @andrewssports was healthy when I started there, because things in my career could have turned out much differently. But I still love going a half-mile down the street to get there, whether to the tables, the horse side, the lounge, the poker room, the movie theater, the bowling alley, the variety of restaurants or (mostly) the sports book.
And I still love and miss Dave Sharapan, today as much as any day all year. Football season won't be the same in 2026-27, but I'll do my best to share any stories I get at the book going forward because I know Dave and his friends would appreciate someone trying to keep "that part" of Vegas alive...
