When it's the broker's fault, don't let the BROKER GET AWAY!
3 years of trading, I was always under the impression that even though there's any technical glitch from broker's side, I will be the one to bear the losses. When this happens to others, some call it Cost of doing Business, others would rant on twitter and let it go.
Recently I came across a space by @BandiShreyas where he invited @trader_vij13292 to share his story of how he got a refund by relentlessly escalating his issue with Zerodha, SEBI, BSE & finally GRC. The issue here is the glitch which happened on 7th July, 2023 where traders, for short period of time, were unable to place orders or exit their positions on zerodha's trading terminal and the same issue had happened with zerodha one week prior as well.
You can listen to the full space here: https://t.co/GpcLYMCyPf , but in short, from what I understand @trader_vij13292 had conversations back and forth with Zerodha for atleast two weeks where Zerodha kept denying that it was their fault, then he escalated it to SEBI, who brought in BSE as an intermediary between him and Zerodha to get the issue resolved. Zerodha still didn't budge. Then a meeting with GRC (Grievance Redressal Committee) was set which went on for multiple hours and listening to both sides, GRC ordered Zerodha to refund @trader_vij13292 .
Why is there even a assumption that client will bear losses for broker glitches?
Problems like this are not confined just to Zerodha but with all brokers. They hide behind agreements and say "it was an opportunity loss not a notional loss". Why does a broker have more clients than it can handle? Why did zerodha get the minimum bandwidth lease line when it has the largest number of traders? Why did zerodha didn't halt trading when it knew the bandwidth has not been increased?
I request SEBI to penalize brokers for such glitches where they have insufficient infrastructure, were negligent or had written faulty code and order them to refund clients' lost money in any such instances.
Don't let them play with our money. Don't wait for technical breakdowns to make a dent in your trading career.
