Young People Must Be Part of the Movement for Women’s Land Rights.
At the #4thWLRConf26, Ms. Hanifah Nagujja emphasised the importance of engaging young people in challenging harmful cultural practices and advancing equal land rights for women and men.
As future custodians of land, culture and communities, young people must be equipped to question discriminatory norms, promote gender equality and champion women’s access to, ownership and control of land.
Securing women’s land rights requires investing in a generation that will uphold equality, challenge discrimination and drive lasting change within communities.

When Land Becomes the Barrier to Getting Credit
Access to finance remains a major hurdle for women seeking to acquire land, grow businesses and strengthen their livelihoods. At the #4thWLRConf26, Monica highlighted how high interest rates, costly land and limited access to affordable credit keep many women from investing in their economic potential.
Many financial institutions require land titles as loan collateral, yet women without registered land are often locked out of credit. This creates a difficult cycle: women need money to acquire land, but need land to access money.
Monica called for more flexible lending models, including group collateral arrangements, to help women farmers and entrepreneurs secure financing for agriculture and other income-generating activities. Expanding access to credit is essential to making women’s economic empowerment a reality.

A Land Title Can Open More Than One Door
For many women, owning land is not only about having a place to farm or call home. It can also mean greater security, a stronger voice in household decisions and an opportunity to access financing for their ambitions.
At the #4thWLRConf26, Rebecca drew attention to the barriers that keep women from owning land, while speakers challenged financial institutions to rethink lending models that leave women without acceptable collateral behind. From more flexible loan requirements to group-based collateral arrangements, the call is for financing that reflects women’s realities and enables them to invest in agriculture and other enterprises.
Women’s economic potential should not be held back by the very systems meant to support investment and growth. Secure land rights and accessible finance must go hand in hand.
