Bona tarda from the Icknield Way. It might not be the Cairngorms or Pyrenees but a hikeās a hike for aā that, every step matters. I will walk #5000miles restarts June 1 but Iāve just clocked up my first 1000 km (621 miles) of 2026, currently averaging 16.4km (10 miles) per day.
Thank you, all, for your kind words yesterday. When youāre 84 no surgery is āroutineā but my mumās had her operation and is back on the ward, tired but not much pain. Iām sad to be off the Camino but thereās still walking - and writing - to be done.

Bon dia! Welcome to LeĆ³n where Iām on the Camino but no longer of the Camino, if you see what I mean. After nine wonderful days Iāve had to leave the bubble and it feels both sad and weird. Iāve three hours to kill before my train to Lleida departs so letās explore!

Home for tonight, Hotel Castillo El Burgo. Sounds exotic but itās a motorway service station just off the #Camino Frances. Spacious double plus large private bathroom for just 38ā¬.

You know me, Iām a sucker for a religious/folkloric procession, Iāll always follow. But there was an element of āJeux sans Frontieresā with todayās. Negotiating the overhead cables reminded me of the āFil Rougeā. I hope they had an engineer on standby!

Bon dĆa! Day 9 of my #Camino FrancĆ©s has dawned crisp and clear, and what a difference that makes. Yesterday the grey skies wore me down, accentuated my aches and pains, today it feels like Iām walking on air. Like long lost lovers, the Meseta and I are reconciled.

Unlike many pilgrims Iām not on a tight budget and Iām only on the Camino for a fortnight. I also want to do my best to support the local economy and the many kind people who provide services and an infrastructure for us so Iām splashing out 24ā¬ on the special weekend menu.
Home for tonight, El Castillo de Moratinos, Moratinos, 40ā¬. Itās a room with private bathroom in casa rural. Thereās a kitchen but as the village population is just 17 thereās no shop.

Fin de etapa, the tiny hamlet of Moratinos. Iād hoped to make it to the town of SahagĆŗn, a further 9.5km distant but itās cold and grey and raining on and off. And my left footās giving me grief.

Calzadilla de la Cueza. The end of the āDreaded 17.5ā is in sight. Even in its curtailed form itās still a spirit crusher.

I was going to say that this is where the madness begins but due to the construction of a motorway the route has changed and the āDreaded 17.5[km]ā, which went on and on and on, like a Status Quo record, is no more. Itās now just 12. And Iām rather sad about that.

Bon dia! The impressive Monasterio de San Zoilo, CarriĆ³n de los Condes, starting point for Day 8 of my #Camino Frances. And itās the day I meet my ambulatory nemesis, the āDreaded 17.5ā. More of that anon.

Fin de etapa in sight! CarriĆ³n de los Condes is just 2.5km away. In my thesis I subtitled the section on this part of the Camino āCarriĆ³n Regardlessā. Once again, my examiners were not happy!

Bona tarda. Iām afraid the final 18km of todayās 42km stage will be lacking in excitement. I have to get to the next town, CarriĆ³n de los Condes, to position myself for a long slog tomorrow because thereās no accommodation for 23km. And rain is forecast.
