Our #50yearsofMagpas series is almost over... From 2010 - 2020 not only did we secure our own orange air ambulance, we also upgraded to a larger, faster helicopter, the AW169, in 2019 - the current Magpas Air Ambulance.

In this time, the charity also developed a network of Community First Responder Schemes across Cambridgeshire & Bedfordshire, establishing 42 groups with over 400 volunteers. The CFR Scheme, now part of the ambulance service, is still active today. #50yearsofMagpas

In 1997 we entered a new partnership with Cambridgeshire Constabulary to use the police helicopter to respond to emergencies, & 2 years later became the first service in the region to provide a night-time helicopter emergency medical service, running until 2am. #50yearsofMagpas

Magpas saved thousands of lives in this time. As well as this the charity also became a founding member of BASICS and helped create the Diploma in Immediate Medical Care – a diploma that, to this day, all Magpas doctors and critical care paramedics must pass. #50yearsofMagpas

Next up in the #50yearsofMagpas series: Over the next 20 years, the need for our service was only growing, particularly as seatbelts weren’t compulsory until 1983 and Magpas doctors were being called to a larger variety of incidents.

Continuing the #50yearsofMagpas series... By 1972 Magpas had secured £25,000 in funding, enabling them to supply all doctors with equipment and pagers in order to respond from home or their GP surgeries and start saving lives in Cambridgeshire.
