I found it surprising that Japanese textbooks are a good amount shorter than American textbooks. As Gutek explained, we aim to overload our students with information, but the Japanese aim to teach their students the necessities. #511global

I was impressed that in Japan, families are saving for their children's education from the moment they are born. Even from the early years, parents recognize the importance that education has on their children's future. #511global

Many of Mexico's higher ed institutions have an "open door" policy...where in China many students need to have a specific talent and high test scores to attend a higher ed institution. I wonder if Mexico's policy has actually helped attendance? #511global

Connecting #2 #511global: In looking at this article, I can't help but wonder how the system of promotion Gutek mentioned works. If 40% of teachers in Mexico don't speak the same language as their students, how is advancement based on teacher recs? https://t.co/n3A8T9OkaP Joseph

Mexico took a few cues from France not only in how they modeled their revolution after France's, but also in how their governments completely rid schools from the influence of the Catholic church despite a majority of citizens being Catholic. #511global

I like that learning another language begins early, ex. math is taught in English at Filadelfia. Public Schools in VA also have bilingual schools. Some subjects are taught in Spanish. Is this something more schools should try in the U.S.? https://t.co/QshL9NwyHj #511global

I felt empowered by the video and Elisa Guerra. Students & teachers from Colegio Valle de Filadelfia are passionate about education and the innovative way of learning. From violin lessons to shop classes the curriculum is well rounded and engaging. #momgoals #511global

It is shocking that students in Mexico decline 23% between ages 15-19 and 4.3% between ages 20-24. College education is a huge priority for Americans. This shows the percentage of immigrants in the US. Could education be the reason? #511global https://t.co/jhatws9ewl

I have to agree here, It seems as though France is working hard to move things through there legal system and make changes where as things seem to move very slow or have to much control at state level. Interesting comparison #511global https://t.co/00tWjdTbdL

Comparative: Both the video and chapter show French fed control over ed, claiming this leads to stagnancy. But the US system is also stagnant and more control is in the hands of the states rather than the fed gov't. What's the real problem then? Joseph #511global

In France, much like the US the government works very hard to ensure that church and state remained separate, Unlike in the UK where the church of England is a part of the schools #511global

@jmconrow Unity is great as it builds a community together, but teachers begin to care more about "staying on track" than to look for teachable moments in their curriculum. Learning is not a conveyor belt of information, rather students need to digest, question and apply it. #511global

Gutek explains how influential religion is on UK state sponsored schools, this contrasts greatly with that of the United States #511global
