Sanctuary has taken quite a journey to where it is today - 3 different locations, close to 4000 patients, and more than 40 staff and volunteers in 6 years.

Their contribution amounts to more than 550 hours monthly, and this figure does not include the time that staff contribute over and above their paid hours.

With a limited budget and many operational needs, we Sanctuary would not be able to provide the care that we do without a committed team of volunteers! More than 25 volunteers regularly give of their time and energy to support the work at Sanctuary.

Other staff are learning the basic conversational skills of languages most commonly heard among our patients. Our pronunciation may not be quite right but will bring a smile to the face of even the most worried patient and help them to feel welcome!

That said, Sanctuary team members represent the diversity of the Canadian population and for some English is not their first language either. Many have acquired languages from earlier experiences living in other countries.

Wherever possible, through interpretation on site or over-the-phone, we try to provide care in the patient’s first language to maximize both accuracy and comfort.

The diversity present at Sanctuary is very apparent in the number of languages spoken. Sanctuary patients speak at least 35 different first languages and have learned many others - most currently are facing the significant challenge of learning English!

We are very excited about this unique distribution, as it means that the incredible young people we see at Sanctuary everyday will be some of those contributing to Canadian culture and shaping the future!

Compared to 23% of Ontario, 47.5% of Sanctuary’s patients are under 20 years old - twice as many! And only 3.2% of Sanctuary patients are 65 or older, compared to 16.7% of Ontario residents in general.

The population served at Sanctuary is different than Ontario’s overall population in many ways, including age distribution.

Will Allen, the Clinic Coordinator at Sanctuary, is one of those pursuing a career in medicine. “It is a gift to come to work everyday,” he says.

To date, two former volunteers are at medical school already, with three team members hoping to be accepted soon, and a steady stream of medical residents gaining exposure to new cases and social determinants not seen at other practices.

Sanctuary is an incubator for medical graduates of the future, and it is hoped that some of them will practice refugee medicine as professionals.
