When @CAgovernor @GavinNewsom signed my #AB889 on #fentanyl education, his staff was so gracious, empathetic, and kind. I truly believe if the legislature sent him my bipartisan #AB19 on narcan in schools, he would have signed. No need for #caleg to kill it at the 11th hour.
California teens have a higher rate of overdose ED visits than all other age groups in the state. Passage of #AB889, which asks schools to educate parents on the risks associated with fentanyl, is a valuable step to reduce these harms. Hope they pass AB10 (classroom) also.
Naiive youth are uniquely affected by fentanyl. Many parents are unaware or falsely believe their family is immune. L.E. messaging can lack nuance & be heavy on fear. Public health agencies may struggle to reach and connect to all these parents. School messaging 🎯🎯🎯.
