On the sidelines of the #ACTIF_2023, Afreximbank and the International Trade Centre (ITC) held a panel under the theme, ‘Unlocking Agribusiness Potential: Strengthening Caribbean-Africa Trade and Investment Relations’.
This networking side event aimed to highlight and explore the unrealised opportunities for trade and investment in agribusiness, with a particular focus on addressing logistical challenges and enhancing economic ties and inter-regional value chain development between the two regions.
Opening Remarks were given by Mr. Escipion Oliveira, Executive Director of Division of Enterprise Competitiveness and Institutions, International Trade Centre and Mr. Yusuf Daya, Director of AU/AfCFTA Relations and Trade Policy, Afreximbank. Speakers included Natasha Walcott, Caribbean Export Development Agency, Marlene Porter, JAMPRO, Jose Cedeño, Center of Export and Investment of Dominican Republic (Prodominicana) and Mr. Sergne Aliou Diop, President, ECOWAS TPO NETWORK/ ASEPEX. #Afreximbank
Day 2 at the #ACTIF_2023 started off with an opening address delivered by Dr. Didacus Jules, Director General, Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission.
We went straight into the first panel discussion of the day which was titled, ‘Improving food security, agricultural productivity and expanding agribusiness opportunities’. The session touched on how agricultural productivity can be improved and opportunities for agribusiness to expand to enhance food security, take advantage of the circular economy, generate employment and export opportunities, and increase rural incomes.
The panellists were H.E. Babajide Sanwoolu, Executive Governor, Lagos State, Dr. Patrick Antoine, CEO and Technical Director, Caribbean Private Sector Organisation, Mr. Moataz El-Mokadem, Vice Chairman, Evergreen Egypt United, Mr. Fayaz Shah, Manager, Science Technology and Innovation & Head of the Trinidad & Tobago Unit for Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and Mr. Escipion Joaquin Oliveira Gomez, Director, Division of Enterprise Competitiveness and Institutions (DECI), International Trade Centre (ITC). It is Day 2 at the #ACTIF_2023, and we’re so excited to get right into the swing of things. First, let’s take a quick look at how Day 1 went. #Afreximbank
Day 1 at #ACTIF_2023 was very jam-packed! The third panel discussion was titled, ‘Connecting Africa and the Caribbean: logistics, transport links, payment systems, standards, and more’ and delved into issues that impact trade and investment, and shared experiences on how to manage these challenges.
The keynote address in this session was delivered by Hon. Albert Ramdin, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Business, Suriname, who stated, “...All these crises which we have today, we must take as an opportunity as well, because there are opportunities. And I’ll say this…it is critically important that our region, a small region of 18-19 million people, is able to become as prosperous a community as it can.”

We're thrilled to be a part of the AfriCarribean Trade and Investment Forum 2023 #ACTIF_2023, where deliberations aimed at creating conditions to accelerate private-sector investment; improve infrastructure, financing and trade logistics; and develop special economic zones and industrial parks, amongst others, are ongoing.
Our Group Chief Executive, Adewale Tinubu @adewaletinubu, shared insights in a plenary session themed ‘Opportunities in the Oil and Gas Sector for Africa and the Caribbean’, at the forum.
Speaking on the roadmap to the energy transition for Africa and the Caribbean, @adewaletinubu said:
“There needs to be a just transition. Africa and the Caribbean are going to use the cheapest source of fuel they have to generate income. The third world is a victim of global warming, not the cause.”

The Africa-Caribbean Trade and Investment Forum #ACTIF_2023 is now underway in Guyana. In my remarks at the opening ceremony I noted the economic potential of ongoing collaboration and urged engagments in trade, technology transfer, innovation, tourism & culture.
Hon. Mia Amor Mottley, S.C., M.P., Prime Minister of Barbados, also shared a keynote address this morning with all delegates, speakers and attendees of the #ACTIF_2023.
She emphasised that “13 months ago, we met in Bridgetown to be able to inaugurate the first AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum, and the speed with which we have seen this move is really a testimony to the commitment that all of us have…the fraternity that binds us together and the solidarity with which we treat one another is one of the reasons why we have seen this level of progress and one of the reasons why we are seeing it in areas that matter to us.” #Afreximbank
