@albertabats @adamthomasford @Christina_Davy So interesting. This highlights the challenges, and importance, of communicating wildlife biology. Describing to someone how to design terrestrial #crossings to aid #birds and #bat crossing. #scicomm #ACTWSconnect #ACTWS19
@erinbuchholtz @ClaytonTLamb In the #WiRELab- we are looking at how connectivity is linked to human-wildlife conflict and disease spread. More to come on how that plays out #ACTWSconnect
@adamthomasford, we can't thank you enough, and looking forward to seeing you at #ACTWS19 #CSTWS19 in Canmore next week

Thanks you everyone and especially @adamthomasford for participating in #ACTWSconnect today. That is it for live participation, but @theACTWS will keep an eye on this great conversation.
@ClaytonTLamb Both towns and hwys are likely a pbm, but for different reasons, manifesting a different scales of time and space. If the 'mesh size' of major roads is big enough, and central enough in a spp range, pops can have more viability. #ACTWSconnect

Researchers can increase research exposure through social media engagement, and enhance their performance under traditional measures of scholarly activity.

@JasperMse @AWASkrajny And all the things that are associated with roads....like people! #ACTWSconnect
@DrWildlifeBio @theACTWS Yes - I feel that snakes and people would probably have a hard time coexisting in the urban green spaces of southern Alberta. Thinking about ways to keep populations robust but not 'in all the places' is part of Smart Connectivity! #ACTWSconnect
A great conversation happening at #ACTWSconnect about #wildlife #connectivity. 10 minutes left to get questions to @adamthomasford . Great info on small mammals and birds using #overpasses and #underpasses
@albertabats @theACTWS Also - people (St. Clair; Clevenger; etc) have looked at bird use of overpasses. We have picked up the odd bird using underpasses too:

@albertabats @adamthomasford Bats would select to fly over an overpass than a bare highway? #ACTWSconnect
@albertabats @theACTWS Yes we have! (not the model shown in this pic, but the older kind that was used when @ReconyxInc still came in pelican cases!). You might say we picked up some of the 'least' assuming animals! #ACTWSconnect

@FattebertJ @theACTWS Good question - most of them :] For that talk, I was circuitscaping. I have since worked with UNICOR and linkage mapper. Currently working through an r package with @Lontrenzo to do some ABM-style analyses. I feel that model validation is the most important part! #ACTWSconnect
@IntegratEcology In Canada, some of the best #roadecology is being done by @ParksCanada. provincial agencies are doing what they can - but there is no national program. I've discussed this @Transport_gc @MarcGarneau - good for urban/rural people and wildlife! #ACTWSconnect
@awacc Great question!!! One of the biggest challenges is designing xings for species that do not interact with the highway that often. These 'high elevation localized species' may need to cross the highway for gene flow and demographic rescue between isolated pop'n #ACTWSconnect
@eamon_rs This is a great question for @adamthomasford that doesn't get enough attention. The idea of a crossing structure as a trap #ACTWSconnect
@eamon_rs Landscape features, including the ones people make, and modify, influence predator-prey interactions. In @BanffNP, crossings did not change the frequency of these interactions more than the surrounding landscape. So its unlikely to be a sink in that case. #ACTWSconnect

Fragmented skies: Over the USA, there are 6 million cubic km of skies through which planes ascend and descend, creating a network of high-risk areas for flying animals.

@AWASkrajny Great question - crossings usually only appear on busy roads - which are usually upgrades from lower traffic/smaller roads. WCS + fencing helps alot - but there is not substitute for 'not building a road', which starts with rural and resource roads. #ACTWSconnect
@albertabats @adamthomasford Have you seen @adamthomasford work on skyway fragmentation?
