OdaJoe himself studied abroad in the US, so perhaps that informed the story–the fish out of water element feels quite real and relatable. Also gotta hand props to Jai West for his lively and convincing performance as a part-Japanese drug dealer in New York.

Interesting mix of hard American street culture and emo Japanese indie film trappings. As an American it barely works, but it does have an emotional heft that carries things nicely. On a visual level it has a cool and rough–and endearingly cheap–handheld cam charm.

Pure, unadulterated fanservice. And that's why it's great. However, given how Wing's writing flails by the end, there's not much here beyond the pretty pictures. Many amazing and iconic moments, but the nostalgia glasses do a lot of work.

The visuals get nice and weird by the end, be them dreamy fantasyscapes or slick retro sci-fi environments.
Also love the pointed jabs at US foreign policy--gonna pin those on the one Wakamatsu Pro alum on staff.

The perfect version of Lupin, mixing in the crude degeneracy of the original with the globe-trotting and set pieces that would define the series. Everyone is such a shit in this film, and I love them all for it. And I always enjoy seeing inside of Lupin's mind.

Story-wise, it leans dangerously close to insipid, but takes big swings that I respect. I need to give it another watch before passing judgment.
And hey, it's a rare chance to see Asō Kumiko in a daring, sexy role, which is cool given how clean her image is now.

This is definitely an early-2000s Japanese art film, focusing on a group of listless young people, with an on-point dreamy aesthetic complete with rich grain, blown out colors and a pervading sense of melancholy. Excellent vibes all around.

The film has a cool structure, and feels like it would do well on multiple viewings, given how it slowly reveals itself and comes together. It certainly does a hell of a lot in its under 2-hour run time, and does very well to show over tell.

Takeshi's take on late-90s lost-decades malaise, mixing in his pension for crime stories, strange humor, and deeply human moments. However, unlike other films that focus heavily on the darkness of this time, Hana-bi is keen to include the small, happy moments as well

Yūsaku's performance is incredible. He brings the demented edge from Yajū Shisubeshi's Date Kunihiko and mixes it with the goofy slapstick of Tantei Monogatari's Kudō Shunsaku. A standout role.

Amazing farce comedy looking at Japan getting its first taste of filthy Bubble Era wealth, and how it's destroying people's minds. The comedy is extremely well-crafted, and the refined arthouse style delivers the proceedings with the perfect amount of surrealism.
