CDF LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT (PART 2) Narshon T. Kohlo is a Zimbabwean youth leader, human rights defender and social and economic justice activist with a sustained record of involvement in the struggle for democracy, constitutionalism, accountable governance and the protection of fundamental freedoms. His activism was significantly shaped within Zimbabwe’s student movement, where he served in leadership roles in the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), including as Chairperson of the ZINASU University of Zimbabwe Chapter. Through the student movement, he has been at the forefront of campaigns defending the right to education, academic freedom, students’ welfare and the broader democratic rights of young Zimbabweans. His activism has included peaceful mobilisation and protest, advocacy and strategic litigation in defence of constitutionally guaranteed rights. In 2022, Kohlo was among the student leaders who approached the High Court challenging increases in tuition fees at the University of Zimbabwe on constitutional and administrative-law grounds. The litigation ultimately resulted in the impugned fee-setting process being set aside, reinforcing his commitment to using both civic mobilisation and constitutional mechanisms in defence of socio-economic rights. He has also faced arrest, disciplinary proceedings and suspension arising from peaceful student activism, including mobilisation in solidarity with university lecturers and in defence of quality and accessible education. Beyond student activism, Kohlo has increasingly contributed to national, regional and international conversations on constitutional democracy, civic space, youth participation, human rights, public accountability and social and economic justice. His perspectives on Zimbabwe’s constitutional crisis and attempts to alter constitutional safeguards have been featured by CIVICUS, connecting Zimbabwe’s struggle for constitutionalism with wider global conversations on democratic governance and the protection of civic space. He has further participated in public-policy and civil-society platforms addressing issues including public debt accountability, fiscal governance, service delivery, citizen participation and socio-economic justice, reflecting his conviction that political democracy must be accompanied by economic and social justice. Within the Constitution Defenders Forum (CDF), Kohlo previously served as National Students Coordinator, working to organise, mobilise and politically educate students around constitutionalism and democratic citizenship. He now serves as the CDF National Youth Chairperson, with responsibility for strengthening youth structures, expanding grassroots mobilisation and building a politically conscious generation of young constitutional defenders. A committed Pan-Africanist, Kohlo believes that young people must move beyond being passive beneficiaries of democracy to becoming active architects and defenders of democratic institutions.
