Al-Anbar Channel toured an Assyrian church in #Anbar & asked what remains of the Christian presence there. A few empty churches remain, along with a history reaching back to the 5th century that most people have never heard.
Ancient Anbar was also significant for the #Assyrian Church of the East. Perōz-Šāpūr, "Victorious Shapur," whose ruins lie near modern #Fallujah, was a see of the Church of the East. It is first attested in the 5th century and still had a bishop as late as 1111.
Three of its bishops went on to become Catholicos-Patriarchs:
• Ṣliba-zkha (713–728)
• Theodosius (853–858)
• Yohannan bar Narsai (884–891)
A fourth nearly did. Eliya of Anbar, a 10th-century bishop and author of the Ktaba d-durrasha ("Book of Exercise"), a long work of #Syriac didactic verse, was elected Catholicos in 938.
The caliph's approval was withdrawn before his enthronement, and the office went to another man.
Anbar also held two monasteries, St. Quryaqos and the famous Mar Yonan on the Euphrates. A monk was still copying manuscripts at Mar Yonan in 1276, long after Anbar's last recorded bishop.
Anbar mattered to Jews as well. Its community, which the sources connect with Pumbedita, was among the largest in Babylonia and home to one of the great academies of the talmudic age.

🚨A first-of-its-kind discovery in #Iraq: a water cave deep in the #Anbar desert containing a flowing river & rare #blind_fish.
