Just like with Kosovo, Serbia annexed Montenegro in 1918, under the guise of “unification” After King Nicholas I, of Montenegro was forced into exile, Serbian forces took control of the country. In just a few days (December 1918), they drafted rules, staged a referendum under military presence, and convened the Podgorica Assembly, which declared the abolition of Montenegro’s monarchy and its annexation to Serbia. The assembly was dissolved immediately after serving its purpose. This wasn’t unificationit was occupation disguised as legality. 📚 As historian Srđa Pavlović notes, the entire process was engineered to eliminate Montenegrin sovereignty (Pavlović, 2008). Also Walter Littlefield (1922) saw it as political manipulation, not genuine democracy. 🗓️ Montenegro disappeared as a state for nearly 90 years, until regaining independence in 2006.
