Arweave for Newbies: How It Works and Why It Exists Learn about the Permaweb and Arweave’s vision for a permanent source of truth. An Arweave | in-depth 📝 Between all the misinformation, fake news and broken backlinks online, to say the internet’s in poor shape is putting it mildly. While historical buildings continue to stand the test of time around the world, the integrity of our nascent digital landscape is eroding at an alarming rate. What if there was a solution to store our knowledge securely, capture our most valuable moments in time, and provide verifiable proof that our data has not been tampered with? That is exactly what Arweave is building. The risks of relying on centralized storage The architecture and storage practices of our world wide web have changed dramatically during the short period of time it's been online. From an exciting initiative to connect computers around the world, we’ve now ended up in a position where the majority of data is controlled by a handful of storage providers. This centralisation of data control is of course not without its risks. To quote a passage from George Orwell’s novel 1984, "Who controls the past, controls the future: who controls the present controls the past." And while solutions like the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine do exist, they too cannot always be relied upon as permanent, verifiable sources of truth. How Arweave fixes this issue Arweave proposes a solution to the challenges of censorship, data loss and deletion with its decentralized, permanent data storage ledger. By globally distributing its infrastructure over numerous independent storage providers, Arweave operates as a storage solution that functions without the need for centralized control. The advantages of such a solution are many and varied, here are but a few examples: • A permanent storage solution means missing backlinks and persistent “404 page not found” errors become things of the past. • Authors of publications such as news articles, research papers, and court documents can be confident that their resources remain permanently accessible. • Consumers and investors can rely upon verifiable timestamps and version edit histories to fight back against fraud and corruption. • Digital information can be sourced back to its origin, a useful tool that’s required to tackle the proliferation of misinformation. There are of course other projects that aspire to this cause, but a key difference is Arweave’s unique pay once, store permanently assurance. This is in stark contrast to the various storage rental models that exist online today. The decentralization of the Arweave protocol, along with its incentive program to keep node operators running the system, is the key to how the platform maintains its assurances. There are many technical features that give Arweave its unique characteristics, too much to get into in this short introduction. But an overview of some core concepts and components will help you grasp the bigger picture. Arweave’s technical features In order to remain impartial and incorruptible, Arweave uses cryptographic proofs of storage as a verification method of data on the network. Node operators who contribute to the network should be incentivised to cover their expenses. This is done through the automatic issuance of Arweave’s native $AR cryptocurrency. $AR is used to pay transaction fees, for storing data, retrieving data, and interacting with Permaweb applications. There are 66 million $AR coins in total, 55 million of which were minted in the genesis block back in 2018. The remaining 11 million are released as mining rewards over time. Arweave’s protocol currently redirects approximately 83% of the network’s transaction fees to a storage endowment fund, which serves to support the running costs of the network over a long time horizon. Over 11,400 $AR was allocated to the endowment fund in Q1 of 2024, worth just over half a million USD at the time of writing. The cost of storage builds upon the presumption that data storage costs decline over time, with calculations based on a model extending 200 years into the future. The method in which Arweave inscribes data and rewards miners is similar to other cryptocurrency protocols, such as Bitcoin, but also differs in a distinct manner. Whereas Bitcoin requires nodes to maintain a full list of every single transaction (known as a blockchain), Arweave only requires miners to show proof of the most recent block of transactions, as well as another randomly selected one. In doing so, Arweave is not considered a classical blockchain, but a blockweave, while the distinct miner selection technique forms part of the Succinct Proofs of Random Access (SPoRA) consensus mechanism. As miners have no certainty as to which random block will be chosen, they are incentivized to store as much data as possible. But matters like read/write speed, network speed and computing power can quickly lead to competitive advantages for owners of more performant equipment. This is apparent in the Bitcoin ecosystem, where pools of powerful computers are required to compete for block rewards. Over the past few years, Arweave has addressed these centralization risks with numerous iterations of its protocol. In a recent upgrade to the network, a cryptographic clock known as the Hash Chain was introduced that effectively limits the computing range to that of standard mechanical hard drives. Storage price per gigabyte is more expensive than other Web2 or Web3 solutions, but Arweave offers a single payment for permanent storage. At the time of writing, the price to submit 1GB of data was approximately 35 USD. As for the content storage method, this is by default public and unencrypted (although Permaweb services do exist that provide additional encryption services). By acting like a public archive, the Arweave network opens itself to the risk of housing sensitive, harmful or even illegal material. Storage providers can therefore choose not to store certain files if they don’t want to. The content policy enabled by the protocol and the various layers provides a safety mechanism for users and operators. Imagine being a miner and explaining to your local authorities why you’re housing certain illegal content on your machine. While we can dive much deeper into the various aspects of Arweave’s technical features, these concepts should serve as a base-level understanding of what the Arweave network is and how it’s maintained. This is where the fun begins. The Permaweb and other utility Arweave’s network acts as a trustworthy archive, but its utility extends much further than that. The Arweave ecosystem truly comes to life when you allow people and applications to manipulate the data and incorporate it into their daily lives. This is where the Permaweb comes into play. The Permaweb is a layer above the Arweave network. It’s where Permaweb applications live. Think of these like the various individual shops that bring diversity and functionality to a large shopping mall. These are accessed through gateways that look and feel like your average website. Perhaps most importantly, Permaweb sites use Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), meaning they can easily be accessed like any other website on the world wide web. There is a wealth of projects building in this ecosystem.
